Moving out of student accommodation is easier said than done. You'll be surprised by how much stuff you have in your room. Lovespace's storage experts have put together a comprehensive guide with all the essential steps you should take, and some tips on how to make the moving process slightly easier.

Whether you are graduating this year or progressing to your next academic year, summer is move-out season! Moving out of student accommodation is easier said than done. You will be surprised by how much stuff you have in your room – packing and moving all your items to your new place can be a tedious and stressful task.

We asked LOVESPACE – an innovative student self-storage company that offers storage, packing and shipping solutions to students across the UK. Their storage experts have put together this comprehensive guide to summarise all the essential steps you should take, and some tips on how to make the moving process slightly easier.

Before moving out:

  • Gather packing materials

Cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and scissors are must-haves when packing. Avoid using boxes that have already been heavily used – you need sturdy boxes that will protect your items throughout their journey to the next home. To make it easier for you, you can purchase your packing materials from LoveSpace

  • Start packing in advance

Procrastinating on your next project deadline is one thing, but leaving packing to the last minute is a recipe for disaster! Begin the packing process early and establish a weekly target for yourself, such as packing two boxes per week.

This approach allows you to steadily make progress while also allowing time for social activities with friends. Don't forget to label your boxes to identify their contents. This simple step will save you from rummaging through multiple boxes at your new place in search of specific items, like your favourite outfit!

  • Deep clean

Make sure to mop, hoover and wipe surfaces; and clean all appliances including sinks, hobs, ovens, microwaves, toilets, showers and mirrors.

  • Declutter and donate

Moving is the perfect opportunity for you to organise and minimise your belongings! Take some time to assess the items you own, whether to keep, donate, or throw them away.

Be strict – only keep items that you need and use regularly; or those that hold sentimental value to you. All Unite Students properties have a British Heart Foundation donation point, so give those unwanted items to a good cause.

  • Repair any damages

If you spot any damage or faults in your room before you move out, report this on the MyUnite app as soon as you notice them.

On the move-out day:

  • Move your stuff to the ground floor

It’s move-out day! Get all your boxes and items together and move them to reception. You might want to check in advance to see if your accommodation has trolleys to borrow on the day, or getting your friends to help might be a good idea to reduce the number of trips.

You may want to do this earlier in the morning than in the peak move-out hours because trust us – you want to avoid the traffic on the lifts! Alternatively, you can book LOVESPACE for doorstep collection and skip this step! The drivers will collect all your items directly from your room.

  • Take all the rubbish out

No one wants to deal with second-hand rubbish: empty your bins!

  • Return keys

Do one last stroll through your room and flat to double-check you've got everything before you bid farewell to your old home. Don't forget to hand back your keys and passes to reception on time!

  • Move your stuff to your new home

Now it’s time to move all your items to your new home. Always ask for help – doing it all alone is nearly impossible. In times like this, we are here to help! Place an order with us and LOVESPACE will collect your items directly from your building and we will deliver them to your new home as soon as the next two working days.

If you have a gap between your move out and the start of your new tenancy, we can look after your stuff. Store your items by-the-box for as long as you like, and we will return them to you to any address in the mainland UK.

For an even more convenient service you can book our storage units. We offer a professional packing service exclusively for storage unit customers for an additional charge starting from £79. Our movers will carefully disassemble, wrap and pack your items on collection day.

With LOVESPACE, your move out of student accommodation will be a much smoother and faster process! Plus if you’re a Unite Students resident, you can get discounts at LOVESPACE. Simply click Perks in the MyUnite app to check out any current offers.
