‘Scary and exciting!’: YouTuber Eve on waiting to start uni

Just finished your A-Levels? Trying to picture yourself at uni? YouTuber Eve Bennett knows how you feel. We asked the revision and study guru how she’s feeling about starting university this year.

Here’s what Eve had to say about summer, nerves, excitement, fish, and ponds.

For me, university has always been a long way away, a stage in my life that lies way off in the distant future. University was always for grown ups, for people who have their life sorted out. But now I’m 18, I’ve learned to drive, I can vote and drink, and I’m somehow old enough to go to university!

Now my time in secondary education is over I’m finding myself in a sort of limbo. I don’t yet feel old enough or mature enough to make that leap to university, but I also know I’ve outgrown high school. With a three-month summer ahead of me, I’m hoping I’ll figure everything out.

I’m extremely excited to be studying the subjects I love at university, but the thought of only studying one subject is somewhat terrifying. Will I get sick of it? Will I want more variety?

In school, everything was certain. I had a routine, I knew everyone and everyone knew me, I knew my place. I was a big fish in a small pond which, whilst a comfortable position to be in, can’t last forever. Now I’m going to university I’m going to be the smallest fish in a very VERY big pond, thrown out of the comfort of my normal routine and left to make decisions for myself. If I want to eat? My choice whether to cook or eat out. 9am lecture? No one is forcing me to go.

Not having that stability and someone ensuring you’re where you need to be when you need to be there is a very scary prospect. But, I’m excited for a new chapter in my life where I learn to take responsibility for myself and my own actions. I’ll miss the home comforts, my huge bed, my dog, having food cooked for me. But I’m excited to be able to make my own decisions and only have myself to answer to. It’s that sort of responsibility that helps you grow and mature as a person.

There’s so much that is unknown about university but that’s precisely what makes it so exciting. But for now, I’m going to enjoy my summer of freedom before the next big adventure of my life begins!
