Moving away for university can be an exciting time, but amongst all the preparation and anticipation, it’s easy to forget to pack a few key things that might come in handy. Aside from the obvious kitchen and bedding sets, here’s a list of 7 essential items you don’t want to forget to bring.
1. Clothes hangers (and lots of them!)
Be sure to pack a few dozen of these. They’re easy to forget but will save you the time of folding up all your clothes in your wardrobe and will prevent them from creasing too.
2. Laundry bag
The laundry room in your building might be on a different floor from your room, or within a different block. Get a bag that’s easy to transport between your room and the laundry facilities (preferably one with handles!). Using a soft bag instead of a basket can also help save on packing space as they can be easily folded up.
3. An extension lead
Bring an extension lead as a convenient solution to plug in all your electrical items where you want them.
4. Pack of cards/games
A game of cards is a fun way to break the ice with your flatmates and get to know each other better. You’ll be thankful to have these whenever you invite people around as well.
5. Tupperware
Balancing social activities with university work means you might not always have the time to cook a fresh meal every day. Pack a set of tupperware to help with meal prep and to store any leftovers.
6. Medication
Paracetamol, plasters, cough syrup, vitamins, etc. You don’t want to wait until you’re bed ridden to realise you don’t have any medication, freshers flu is a real thing!
7. Decorations and photos from home
Anything to make your room feel more homely - pictures of friends and family are always good to help curb home sickness!
