Now that you know what you should bring, it’s also useful to know what items are not worth the stress of packing. Here’s a list of 6 items you probably won’t need to bring to university.
1. An iron
Chances are, you won’t need to iron your clothes as often as you think you will. If you’re really keen to bring one, check what appliances come with your accommodation as some flats may already have an iron in them.
2. Your entire wardrobe
Whilst it’s tempting to simply pack all the clothes and shoes you own, you likely won’t end up wearing all of them. Bring the clothes you know you definitely will wear and save some storage space for other items.
3. Old revision notes
It’s easy to think some of your old revision notes might prove useful, but for most students those bulky revision folders will go untouched during your time at university.
4. Too many kitchen appliances
It’s a good idea to bring your own cutlery, crockery and pans, but you could save money by sharing other utensils (such as kitchen scissors or cheese graters) with your new flatmates. You can use the app to communicate with your flatmates about which items you might be comfortable sharing with each other before you arrive. Additionally, all flats come equipped with a toaster, kettle and a microwave so there's no need to haul these heavy items with you.
5. Printer
Most universities will ask you to submit work online. If you do need to print anything, your university libraries will have plenty of printers available to use. Alternatively, some of our buildings have a printer available on site - check your property guide to see if this is included with your building.
6. Excessive stationary
This relates to the above point. As a lot of work will be based online, you may not need as much stationary as you might be used to. Bring the basics, but your 24-colour highlighter set is probably not worth the trip!
